Even if Wie die Zeit läuft! (How time flies!) is not officially designated as a “song without words,” this appellation, created by Mendelssohn himself, could most certainly be applied to describe the genre of this little piece. Wie die Zeit läuft! was written on Easter Sunday 1847 in Leipzig, most likely in the study of Mendelssohn’s residence in the former Königstraße 3 (today Goldschmidtstraße 12). This is where he lived with his wife Cecile and their children from 1845 until his death. Today this house is the only surviving Mendelssohn residence; it houses a memorial devoted to the composer’s life and his activity in the musically rich city.
