Like many other sacred works written by the young Mendelssohn, the "Te Deum" was also conceived for Berlins Singakademie. The 17-year-old composer based himself on Handels wellknown Te Deum settings. Nevertheless, this early work already anticipates the later, large-scale works in which Mendelssohn brought about a renewal of Protestant church music.
