Originally, the present work – with a Latin text and the title "Non nobis, Domine" – was a gift written by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in November 1830 for the 25th birthday of his sister Fanny. Five years later he decided to have it printed, and his publisher Simrock urged him to produce a German translation as well. It is in this form that the setting of Psalm 115 has become known alongside four other Psalms of Mendelssohn's in a compositional scope ranging from church to concert hall.
The Urtext edition is based on the main sources, the autograph and the first edition.
