  • Description

During the 18th century a number of English composers wrote organ voluntaries which make use of the trumpet stop in their main movement, which is invariably preceded by a slow introduction. These trumpet movements are remarkable in that in most cases the trumpet part keeps almost exclusively to the harmonic series of the Natural Trumpet. lt would therefore have been possible to play them using real trumpets, and in all probability this was occasionally done; a selection of six of them, spanning almost the whole of the 18th century, have therefore been reproduced here in this form for the first time.

Editorial additions to the text have been kept to a minimum and are all dearly indicated by the use of square brackets, dotted ties, accidentals placed above notes or by the use of small notes; the latter have been added where the transfer to the trumpet of the right-hand part of the organ bas left long rests, and the resultant filling in of harmonies would bave been likely when tbe melody was being played on a separate instrument instead of the organ.
