Since it has come down to us in an incomplete form, the score had to be subjected to a comprehensive reconstruction in 1995. Diethard Hellmann’s painstaking work was the third reconstruction following those of Bernhard Todt and Walter Reinhart. Hellmann drew on stylistic comparisons with other Bach scores and found a compelling and definitive editorial solution to this often sung work.
