The newly conceived Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (LMA) has already spawned several volumes of early works. With the incidental music to A Midsummer Nights Dream came a work which occupies a central position in the composers oeuvre and which laid the basis for Mendelssohns fame during his lifetime.
The preparation of the complete incidental music within the Complete Edition has given rise to very special questions of form and substance. However, the editorial committee and the publishers are confident that they have found solutions that are both compelling and forward-looking - and that might even apply to other complete editions.
