“Variations” is one of the few pieces in which Denisov experiments with mixed serial technique, at least at the beginning of the work. After exposition of the twelve tones in the form of a lyrico-expressionist theme, six variations offer different pianistic representations, alternately pointillist, melodic, vertical and repetitive, recapitulating elements of the initial series which are to differing degrees recurrent or modified. Withtin these small very concentrated forms one suddenly becomes aware of the imitation of a Schoenbergian style atonal waltz, a short and rousing cadenza, or a number of brassy climaxes which, according to the composer, should remind the pianist of the expression of brass instruments in Tchaikovsky’s music.
