Tyrolean State Prize for Art 2025 Awarded to Johannes Maria Staud

Composer Johannes Maria Staud has been awarded the Tyrolean State Prize for Art 2025. The State of Tyrol is honoring him for his outstanding artistic achievements and his international standing as a leading figure in contemporary music. The award, which includes a prize of €14,000, will be presented on September 23, 2025, during the Festival of Culture at the House of Music in Innsbruck.

Born in Innsbruck in 1974, Staud studied composition in Vienna and Berlin, as well as musicology and philosophy. His works have been performed by leading ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, the Cleveland Orchestra, and Klangforum Wien. He has received commissions from prestigious institutions including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. His opera Die Weiden premiered at the Vienna State Opera in 2018.

Since the 2018/19 academic year, Staud has served as Professor of Composition at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. As both composer and educator, he plays a pivotal role in shaping contemporary music and passes on his artistic vision to the next generation.

The Tyrolean State Prize for Art has been awarded annually since 1984. The decision to honor Johannes Maria Staud was made unanimously by a panel of experts. In their statement, the jury particularly emphasized the sonic aesthetic and intellectual depth of his œuvre, as well as his influence as a teacher and mentor.
