The new Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis is here!

The 13th of June 2022 was the day when the third, extended new edition of this indispensable reference work on the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach was presented to the public for the first time on the occasion of the Leipzig Bachfest.

Some 70 participants from the Bach world along with representatives of various media gathered that morning at Leipzig's Alte Börse to attend the presentation of the indispensable reference work.
Pride and joy at having brought the collaborative project to a successful conclusion gleamed through the speeches of all contributors.

As a result of the collaboration between the Bach-Archiv Leipzig and the publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel, a newly designed edition of the BWV has been created that takes account of both new findings from recent Bach research and the altered knowledge and usage structures of the 21st century. The aim has been to develop a comprehensive and contemporary reference work for Bach’s compositions that would appeal equally to interested lay readers and specialists familiar with Bach research.

The first catalog of all Bach’s works, the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV), appeared under the authorship of Wolfgang Schmieder in the Bach anniversary year of 1950. Forty years later, a revised edition of this now internationally recognized reference work was published, followed by a so-called “small version” with further updates in 1998.
