Voices: Leni (Soprano) – Adele von Stromberg (Mezzosoprano) – Rosalie (Mezzosoprano) – von Thurming (Tenor) – Wendelin (Tenor) – Portier (Bariton) – Choir / Chor der Beamten (both monophonic)

The incidental music comprises an overture and 25 numbers (couplets, melodramas, interludes, etc.).

“The composer could not allow himself to participate in and duplicate the plays delirious jokes or the wild humor and bitterness of the scenes so as not to mislead the viewer and infuse such an important play with a farcical character. The overture and interludes are intended to entice the viewer out of the antics on the stage. They aim to bring him back to his senses so that these amazing events strike him more as strange than familiar, as mysterious more than everyday. There is no great comedy without heartache. Humor uplifts us over misery.”

(Hanns Eisler)
