Due guardie, due bambini, ormeggiatori, clienti dell’osteria.  

Following a storm, a ship enters port unscathed. The Captain says that thanks are due to St Nicholas, – who has suddenly appeared among the sailors – to thank. The crowd starts cheering, but their enthusiasm soon ceases because the ship has come to load a cargo of grain for the Emperor. And since there is a famine, the people are hungry. Stepping down onto the quayside, Saint Nicholas intervenes and, amid general revelry, convinces the Captain to leave part of the cargo in the city.

St Nicholas then seeks shelter in a house with an image of himself hanging outside. But the miser who lives in it refuses to let him in, explaining that the image is there to keep off thieves, not to attract pilgrims. A saddened St Nicholas is walking away when a young girl offers to sell herself to him. She explains to the astonished Saint that her family is poor and all that remains for her father to do is sell her and her two sisters. At that very moment, the father gets home and happily announces that the girls have been bought by the butcher. He then goes out again, leaving the three sisters full of despair.

In the meantime, two thieves come to burgle the miser’s house. Seeing the image of the Saint, the good thief would prefer to ditch the plan, but the practical thief goes into the house and steals three sacks of gold. Then St Nicholas appears, makes the two rascals hand over the loot, and sends them packing. Working a miracle, he turns the sacks into gold balls and tosses them to the three sisters.

When he comes home, their father is beside himself. He explains that the butcher has changed his mind and taken three boys instead of the girls. But the sisters show him the gold balls: they have been saved and will have food for a long time, thanks to St Nicholas.

The scene shifts to the butcher’s tavern. St Nicholas walks in, and the padrone offers to serve him some meat he has come across despite the famine. St Nicholas accepts but finds out that three boys have been butchered. So he works another miracle and brings them back to life again. When the butcher realises what has happened, he is terrorised and asks forgiveness. 

The finale takes place back at the port. Amid friendly and affectionate farewells, St Nicholas boards the ship but promises to return to this and to other places, wherever he is needed.

Dopo una tempesta, una nave arriva sana e salva in porto. Il Capitano spiega che bisogna ringraziare San Nicola, comparso all’improvviso tra i marinai. La folla esulta, ma l’entusiasmo finisce presto perché la nave è arrivata per caricare il grano destinato all’imperatore. E, poiché c’è una carestia, il popolo ha fame. San Nicola, sceso sulla banchina, interviene e convince il Capitano a lasciare in città una parte del carico, tra i festeggiamenti generali.

San Nicola cerca poi riparo presso una casa su cui vede appesa un’immagine di sé stesso. Ma l’avaro che vi abita lo respinge, spiegando che il dipinto serve a tenere lontano i ladri, e non ad accogliere i pellegrini. San Nicola, rattristato, si sta allontanando quando una fanciulla gli si propone in vendita. Il Santo è sbigottito e la fanciulla gli spiega che la sua famiglia è povera e al padre non è rimasto altro che vendere lei e le sue due sorelle. L’uomo, infatti, proprio in quel momento arriva a casa e annuncia contento che le ragazze sono state comprate dal macellaio. Poi esce, lasciando le tre sorelle disperate.

Due ladri, intanto, si avvicinano alla casa dell’avaro per svaligiarla. Il ladro buono, vista l’immagine del Santo, vorrebbe desistere; ma il ladro pratico entra e ruba tre sacchi d’oro. Arriva San Nicola, che si fa consegnare dai furfanti la refurtiva e li manda via. Con un miracolo, trasforma poi i sacchi in sfere d’oro e le lancia alle tre sorelle.

Nel frattempo il padre, rientrando a casa sconvolto, spiega che il macellaio ha cambiato idea, e al posto delle fanciulle ha preso tre bambini. Ma le figlie gli mostrano le sfere d’oro: sono salvi, e avranno cibo a lungo, grazie a San Nicola.

Si passa poi nella taverna del macellaio. Arriva San Nicola, al quale il padrone propone di mangiare della carne, che è riuscito a trovare nonostante la carestia. San Nicola accetta ma scopre che sono stati macellati tre bambini, e, di nascosto, con un miracolo li riporta in vita. Il macellaio, quando se ne accorge, chiede perdono, terrorizzato.

Il finale si svolge al porto. Tra saluti amichevoli e affettuosi, San Nicola si imbarca nuovamente, ma promette di tornare, in quella e in altre città, dovunque ci sarà bisogno di lui.
